The preamble of the constitution starts with, “ We the people of India , having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a sovereign socialist , secular democratic republic …” . Do we really understand the meaning of these words or how many of the us given a deep thought to these words. To understand these words we have to learn our history and not only our history but we have to understand the history of the world. Thanks to Yuval Noah Harari for his contributions to humanity. His best selling books like sapiens, Homodues and Nexus gives an investigative approach to human history. Books like the Ascent of money written by Niall Ferguson, Lords of finance written by Liaquat Ahmed and Small is beautiful written by EF Schumacher will give you different perceptive about human behavior against fellow beings and environment around him. It gives you an idea how we created systems from thin air and how systems ruled people.
For centuries, we have proved ourself that it is highly impossible for us to love everyone. We are selective while making relationship when religion, racial bias and cultural bondage that define the inner fabric of our relationship. Casteism the illegal son of racism is an additional burden that indians have to suffer. We defend ourselves that castesims is not racisim and it originated from division of labour eventhough we know that caste hatred had a racial element attached to it. We forbid intercaste marriage fearing about the purity of blood but nobody should ask us, if casteism don’t have racial element then from where does this concept of purity of blood originated. We are happy to keep these double standards, where we preach about human brotherhood in public and talk about caste hatred or religious fanatism in our inner circles.
Religion, racism, money and power struggles are hidden icebergs that decides that meets and boundaries of our society. Rational people become our enemy, if he poke the unbridled bias in our minds. We are happy to embrace the majoritarian views without thinking about the hapless being, who suffer when we seek enemies from minorities. From the United states of America to Sub-Saharan Africa, we find these human tendencies; only the element of gravity that is different. Now it is time to realize that, democracy survives with its true spirit only when we have collective wisdom.
